Working from home

I always think that working from home sounds like a good idea, but it's not. It's actually very boring. Although I have the same access to all the IT systems at home and I have the same mobile number, for some reason I find it much harder to fill my day with work unless people are emailing me things to do, which begs the question - What do I do when I'm in the office?

My reason for being at home today was to wait in for a delivery from B&Q of my new kitchen worktops. The delivery estimate was between 12:00 and 18:00 and at 14:10 they arrived, not bad going. The main concern with B&Q delivery seems to be not whether they arrive when they say they will but more whether they actually deliver what you ordered. All being well I think that part has gone ok. I have the right number of boxes of the right shapes, they're just so heavy that I can't actually get anywhere near opening them to see if it's the right one without danger of serious injury so I think I'm just going to trust B&Q that on this occasion they've got it right. Once I know my neighbours are at home I'll have a look in the box so that should I end up buried beneath one of them I can hammer on the wall and hope that someone comes to rescue me.

Dribbling

I went to the dentist for a filling this afternoon and foolishly joked before I went about how I'd be drooling afterwards and everyone would avoid me because they'd think I was just a bit weird. Little did I know that there would be some truth in that....

I arrived at the dentist on time for my appointment and as usual had to wait before I was seen - half an hour I had to wait today while someone's little boy caused havoc in the waiting room because he thought it was fun to fill up the plastic cups with water from the machine, dribble half of it across the floor and then put the cup and the remaining half of water into the bin.

Having only had 2 fillings before I had forgotten what it was like, although a lot of people have said that it's the injection they don't like that bit was fine. Even the drilling was fine, I was very glad of the protective glasses that they make you wear as I'd much rather the spit and grinds of teeth landed on the plastic rather than all over my face. I was amazed at how much seems to go into your mouth for one filling though, it seemed like she was filling every tooth on one side of my mouth the amount of things that seemed to be going in there. I did have a slight choking fit at one point so they had to stop for a little while I tried to control my throat while I still had various metal contraptions attached to the tooth.

But the worst part came when she told me to rinse - how hard can it be to put some water in your mouth from a cup and then spit it back out into a bowl that is right next to your head? Quite difficult it seems, when half of your mouth doesn't seem to be within your control when you spit back out half of the water lands in the bowl and the rest lands on your hand, watch, arm and more embarrassingly t-shirt as you then have to go back and wait in reception with 4 other people and 2 receptionists to pay for the privilege of spitting up on your own top. Glad I won't be seeing any of those people again!

Choosing a template

I know it's not a very exciting thing to write about but as my blog is fairly new I thought I'd share with you my dilemma of choosing a background template. I started off with the spotted background but I thought it looked too busy and after testing out just about every template available on here I've decided to go with this slightly pink looking one for now. I think the problem is that I want it to fill the page, which it doesn't on any template that you use so it's always going to be more of a column of text down the page. I also wanted it to have a background colour that fills the screen, which not many of them do other than the one that Sal has on hers but I didn't want to have the same one that would just be a bit sad! At some point I'll need to figure out how to put links in as well so that where I've just referred to Sal's blog you will be able to click through to it but I haven't figured out how to do that yet.

So I'm going to put it to the vote of the two people that might actually read this - Mum and Sal, should I leave the template as it is now, go back to the spots or try something different?

A long awaited start to a new kitchen!

My new kitchen finally got underway this week thanks to a visit from Mum and Dad and two days off work. I've been planning it for over a year now and after changing my mind on the door fronts at the last minute when I got to the shop to buy them I'm really pleased with how it's looking so far.

This is how it used to look:

There was a big cupboard on the left hand side which was a lot of storage space but meant that there wasn't a lot of worktop space. It took quite a while to get the cupboard out because we had to lift it up and over the skirting board. The most annoying part was that before that cupboard went it there must have been a normal base unit in that space so all I've done is put it back to how it was before.

Now it looks like this:

There is about three times as much cupboard space as I had before and more worktop space, although at the moment that is only being achieved by the use of two of the old cupboard doors filling in the space!

A big thank you to Mum and Dad for working so hard for three days, taking out cupboards, making and putting up new ones, fitting handles, corner posts, plinths and a few trips back to B&Q for the things that we'd forgotten. Now I just need to wait for the delivery of the worktop, cornice and pelmet and then buy a new oven, fridge, sink etc.... I'll get it finished soon!
